Facebook is a powerful mean of communication, nobody can deny this. Although, at the same time, you can’t simply forget that Facebook is one of our main distractions from work or study. Sometimes the recall of the social network is so strong that you just can’t say no, but I’ve found a way to resist it: block temporary the access to Facebook.
With the free programs that I’m about to illustrate, you can block Facebook on your PC or Mac in a very simple way for a limited amount of time. If you also think that this could be a great way to improve your productivity, then keep reading this guide about how to block the access to Facebook using these free softwares.
If you want to learn how to block the access to Facebook and you’re using a Windows PC, I suggest you to try SelfRestraint out. It’s a free program, quite small and easy to use, that allows you to block the access to a customizable list of Internet websites for a limited amount of time, which may vary between a few minutes to 24 hours.
To download it on your PC, simply visit its Internet website and click on the green button Download located next to the text Windows. Once finished, right click the file just downloaded (eg SelfRestraint v0.3.exe) and select the voice Run as Administrator from the menu that appears to run SelfRestraint.
In the window that opens, click on the button Edit blocklist, add facebook.com on the list of websites to block and then click on Done. Afterwards, use the indicator in the middle of the program to set the duration of the block and click on the button Start to forbid the visiting of the websites written before on the blocklist.
You can block as many websites as you wish, simply type in their addresses in the blocklist, writing one per row. To make the block effective, it may be needed to restart the browser. Also remember that there is no way to disable the block before the timer runs out, so use this program with caution!
You can also block the access to Facebook with ease even if you use a Mac. You simply need to use SelfControl, a small and fast program that has inspired the creation of SelfRestraint for Windows and that allows, like the latter, to block a personalized list of Internet websites for a certain amount of time.
To download the app on your computer, visit its Internet website and click on the blue button Download Selfcontrol. When the download is complete, drag the app’s icon and drop it into the App folder of OS X. Afterwards, right click the icon of SelfControl, select the voice Open from the menu that appears and left-click on Open to run the app.
In the window that opens, click on the button Edit blacklist, add facebook.com to the list of websites to block by clicking on the button “+” and close the blacklist. Afterwards, use the indicator in the middle of the program to set the duration of the block and click on the button Start to complete the procedure.
